You want to get an MBA??? FARE's Step 1...Also...Consortium App Deadline is January 5th!!!

It brings me a lot of joy to help people through the process of applying to MBA programs....especially applying via the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management (http://www.cgsm.org/).  I was a Consortium Fellow at Indiana University Kelley School of Business and I am now a Consortium Alumna (why does that sound so bourgeoisie LOL).  I love to give back.

Getting my MBA was one of the best experiences of my life.  I encourage anyone, especially if you are an under-represented minority, who is thinking about applying to go for it...but please don't go at this process on your own.  You can set yourself up so much better by having people who have gone through the process and are on the other side of the MBA coaching you through this process.

My philosophy is set yourself up for the best possible outcome.  You want to get into a program you fit with personally and financially.  Yeah....I said it...financially!!!  Don't pay full price for an MBA.  I don't want to say it isn't worth it....but..I would not have gotten my MBA without financial help.   It's all about maximizing your personal ROI!!!

When I consult prospective students, it's at least an hour and half conversation, and that is before application submission.   One of my goals for this blog is by the end of the year, anyone could come here and feel as though they have been personally consulted by me.   The only problem is, there are some cold hard truths(FARE Truth's but truth's none the less) that I discuss with people that are specific to them and their situation.   I will keep trying to give guidance in regards to applying to B-School via this blog, but if you ever have questions, don't hesitate to email me feliciaannrose@gmail.com .

For those of you about who have submitted or about to submit, Congratulations!!!  This is just the beginning!!!

Now, if you are thinking about getting an MBA.....

FARE's Step One to the MBA:

GMAT GMAT GMAT.....
So it's January 2011...if you want to be in the class of 2014...You should be studying for the GMAT from Now until April/May and take it May-July time frame.   The best advice I can give you...and I promise you if you follow it you will win the GMAT game.  Cut off everyone and everything except God, Your Health, Work, GMAT.....For three months this should be your GMAT workout.  If your work schedule is a typical 40-45 hour M-F week:  You should get up, exercise, eat a healthy breakfast, go to work.  Eat a healthy lunch, come home and eat a healthy dinner.  From 7pm to 11pm   For the first 2 months you should take spend the first hour taking a timed practice section via computer.  The next hour you go through the practice section and figure what you missed and why.  The 3rd hour you take another practice section. The last hour you go through and figure out what you missed and why.  Do this Monday through Friday.  Yes even Friday Night...you ain't got no where to go...you cut everyone but God off....   Now, Saturday...Sleep in, get some exercise, run your personal errands (no socializing though...gotta stay focused) Take a whole practice test, including essays.  After words take two hours and analyze your results, did you run out time?, were you missing similar problems...are you missing the same types of problems consistently or is it hit or miss?  You have to understand where you are going wrong to fix it.  You also need to track your practice scores.  They should be improving every week.  Sunday...not a day of rest....go to church, then off to another practice test.  Oh year and eat breakfast and get some exercise in.  What does eating right and exercise have to do with a test you sit down at a computer and take.  Look....you need to be a healthy and fit as possible so your brain will be at it's best.  The GMAT is no joke, it has gotten the best of many.  The GMAT is the barrier but you can overcome it with sheer will power and focus.  You have to believe in yourself first, get rid of distractions second, and ask for help when you need it.
I guarantee thought, if you following the GMAT regimen I have prescribed above for 12 weeks, you will have a very high score on the GMAT...even if your first practice test is a 480.   Practice makes perfect.

Stay tuned for FARE's Step Two to the MBA.

Love,
FARE
