I'm super EXCITED Y'all.
I will be attending the National Black MBA Association's Annual Conference which is being held in Los Angeles, California. I have only been as far west as Las Vegas so I'm super pumped about this trip in less than two weeks.
I have registered for the Leadership Institute and I'm super stoked to be attending as a member and participant of the conference for the first time. Shout out to my company for supporting what's important to me.
Now this is not my first National Black, as we familiar with the diversity conference circuit affectionately refers to this conference. The last two years I attended this conference solely to interview for an internship my first year and a full time job my second year.
So now if you are at any stage of your MBA journey before graduation I'm about to kick some knowledge to you about this conference.
1. If you are currently in a full time MBA program and you don't have an internship or full time job lined up. I suggest you attend this conference. It's worth the money if you execute against a planned strategy.
2. If you are attending the conference, your goal right now is to line up at least two interviews before the conference. You can upload your resume on the conference career sight. Company's are pulling resumes and lining up their interview schedules now...so get to it if you haven't already.
3. Conference Strategy- You should have one. Don't go to this thing all lackadaisical..... thinking...I'll just talk to a few folks and feel my way around. You have to attend the career fair with purpose!!!!
If you need some help crafting a strategy hit me up.... feliciaannrose@gmail.com I'm always happy to help.
4. Come with your A+++ GAME!!! This is not a game folks....this is your life. Attending this conference is an investment for your future...don't waste it. Resumes should be on resume paper and nothing less!!! Business cards should be at a seconds reach. You should have a portfolio with your resumes and business cards organized and ready to go.
5. Get there early!!! Let's say you couldn't line any interviews up prior to arriving in LA. You should be the first one through the door of the career fair Thursday morning again with a plan and purpose.
6. Wear comfortable shoes!! This is especially for my ladies....tip toeing around after 4 hours cause your feet hurt is distracting and the shoes won't look nearly as cute as they did when you could walk in them. Recruiters will be in comfortable shoes...they understand. They are there for your talent not your shoe game!!
7. Have your elevator pitch tight and your story on point. See point 4 again.
8. Dress for success. Dress for where you are going and not where you are.
9. Work hard, play harder. If you can, stay the weekend in Cali. After all that work you need to have fun. Make sure you go to as many networking evening events as possible and have fun. But know your limits and watch the alcohol consumption though...BECAUSE.....
10. YOU ARE ALWAYS BEING WATCHED!!! And if you show your behind at the Target or Diageo party Thursday night, Friday morning you could meet your interviewer...the woman you stumbled into and stepped on her toe the night before. NOT A GOOD LOOK. Handle your business first...then play but at all times keep it 100.
There is a lot to do in two weeks so get it together and get the gig you have been working hard to attain!!!
God Bless you all. As always feel free to leave comments. If you have any questions or need some advice hit me up at feliciaannrose@gmail.com
Until next time...this is the FARE MBA Life!!!!
Love,
FARE
